L’artiste et professeur Will Benedict a soumis une série de règles aux étudiant.e.s du Master European Art Ensemble pour leur exposition au Doc!, demandant à chaque étudiant.e de produire un poster imitant et commentant la culture Internet du mème. Une série de sculptures réalisées par les étudiant.e.s fait face au corpus de posters exposé sur le mur de la galerie.

‘Contrairement aux designers, les artistes ont un rapport plus ambigu à l’efficience. Dans le domaine du design, la condition première de production est le client. Mais pour qui et dans quel but l’artiste travaille-t-il ? Pour le collectionneur? Le public? Les humains? Le marché a du mal à régler les réalités pratiques et émotionnelles de cette division classique. Le marché a du mal à faire beaucoup de chose d’ailleurs. Il y a cinquante ou cent ans, les artistes, designers, performers, écrivains et poètes ont tenté de rompre les distinctions arbitraires qui constituer la légitimité d’un genre. Aujourd’hui, à l’ère du Brexit et de Trump, nous nous raccrochons à eux. Angela Merkel est notre héroïne et les Français ont fait le choix de mener le néolibéralisme à une étape supérieure. Monsieur Gorbachev, faites tomber ce mur.’

The artist and professor Will Benedict suggested a precise set of rules to the students of the European Art Ensemble Master for their exhibition at Doc!: to each produce a poster imitating and commenting on Internet meme culture. A collection of sculptures made by the students face the corpus of posters hanging on the wall.

‘In contrast to designers, artists have a more ambiguous relationship to efficiency. In design the primary condition of production is the client. But who does the artist work for and to what end? The collector? The audience? Humans? The market regulates the practical and emotional realities of this classic division rather poorly. The market does a lot rather poorly. 50 or 100 years ago artists, designers, performers, writers and poets attempted to breakdown some of the more arbitrary distinctions that hold a genre together. Today we cling to them in the midst of Brexit and Trump; Angela Merkel is our hero and the French have finally decided to take their flirtation with neoliberalism to the next level. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down that wall.’

DOC est un lieu de production et de diffusion artistique situé au 26, rue du Docteur Potain, 75019 Paris. Créé en 2015, il s’agit d’un espace multiple dans lequel se mélangent pratiques (arts visuels, photographie, artisanat, art de la scène, musique, bijouterie/joaillerie, écriture, montage vidéo, etc.) et acteurs. Depuis plus de dix ans, DOC offre un espace de création, de rencontre, d’entraide et de coopération aux artistes et artisan·es parisien·nes. Par ailleurs, DOC propose une programmation artistique rare, exigeante et toujours à prix libre.

DOC, c’est aussi un collectif — formalisé en association loi 1901 — qui s’organise et qui fait vivre ce lieu. Ce collectif est composé de près de 100 membres, toutes artistes ou artisanes en résidence. Un mode de gouvernance basé sur l’auto-gestion s’est développé, et s’organise grâce à une assemblée générale mensuelle et des comités de pilotage dédiés à différentes thématiques.

DOC is a space for artistic production and presentation located at 26 Rue du Docteur Potain, 75019 Paris. Founded in 2015, it is a multifaceted space that brings together a variety of artistic practices (visual arts, photography, crafts, performing arts, music, jewelry making, writing, video editing, etc.) and artists. For over ten years, DOC has provided a space for creation, connection, mutual support, and collaboration for Parisian artists and craftspeople. In addition, DOC offers a unique, high-caliber artistic program, always with pay-what-you-can admission.

DOC is also a collective—formally organized as a nonprofit association under the 1901 law—that manages and brings this space to life. This collective is made up of nearly 100 members, all of whom are artists or artisans in residence. A governance model based on self-management has developed, organized through a monthly general assembly and steering committees dedicated to various themes.

The association has nine specialized art studios open to residents as well as to the general public: woodworking, metalworking, painting, sewing, offset printing, video post-production, sound, and screen printing. For more information on this topic, contact us at contact@doc.work.
