Ce texte n’existe que pour devenir plus tard une archive, une trace dans la longue et absurde histoire de la parapsychologie, que l’on fait débuter à la fin du XIXe siècle et que l’artiste Kosmas Nikolaou étudie et interprète. Ce faisant, il retrace l’histoire d’instituts, d’associations et de « clubs » variés, où des chercheurs partageant un intérêt pour les phénomènes paranormaux et psychiques (télépathie, clairvoyance, psychokinésie…) ont tenté, pour la première fois, de les expliquer en utilisant des approches scientifiques. Ni spiritualistes, ni psychothérapeutes, ces scientifiques ont essayé de prouver l’existence de phénomènes invisibles tout en prenant leurs distances par rapport à la religion, à la magie et à d’autres croyances et interprétations du même genre.
 
Inspiré en partie par des motivations personnelles (son arrière-grand-père, membre de la Société de Recherches Psychiques (SPR), ayant fait partie du mouvement), Kosmas Nikolaou tente d’enquêter sur l’échec final de ces expériences et sur la dissolution de la branche grecque de la SPR dans les années 1960. L’exposition explore la difficulté du mouvement de réaliser son potentiel avant-gardiste, et révèle son incapacité à réconcilier les concepts primitifs et immatériels auxquels il répond avec ses besoins pratiques de reconnaissance institutionnelle et sociale, et, en fait, son penchant pour le statu quo.
 
À travers des documents d’archive et l’écho de l’espace d’exposition au DOC, Kosmas Nikolaou réécrit l’histoire de ces interactions.

If this text exists, it’s only to later become a piece of an archive, a trace of the long and absurd history of parapsychology that started at the end of the 19th century and that the artist Kosmas Nikolaou studies and interprets. In doing so, he has to tackle the history of various institutes, associations and clubs, where researchers sharing an interest for paranormal and psychic phenomena (telepathy, clairvoyance, psychokinesis…) tried, for the first time, to explain them using formal scientific approaches. Neither spiritualists nor psychotherapists, these scientists tried to prove the existence of invisible phenomena while distancing themselves from religion, magic, and other such beliefs and interpretations.
 
Inspired in part by personal motives (his great-grandfather, a founding member of the Greek Society for Psychical Research (SPR) took part in the movement), Kosmas Nikolaou attempts to investigate the non-fulfilment of these experiments and the collapse of the Greek SPR in the 1960s. The exhibition explores the inability of the movement to realise its avant-garde potential, and exposes its failure to reconcile the primitive and intangible concepts it addresses with its practical aspirations to social and institutional recognition and, in fact, its inclination towards status quo.
 
Through archive materials and the echo of the exhibition space at the DOC, Kosmas Nikolaou is rewriting the story of these interactions.
